10:00 AM – Kera Monastery

The Kera Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Panagia Kardiotissa, is a historic monastery from the 14th century located about 50 km east of Heraklion at an altitude of 650 m. It has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. The monastery houses an impressive collection of icons, liturgical books, and other religious objects.

One of the most significant icons in the monastery is the Panagia Kera, also known as the „Lady of Kera,“ which is now located in the sanctuary of the monastery. It was created by an unknown artist in 1795 and depicts the Virgin Mary sitting on a throne holding the infant Jesus. Jesus is right in front of her, blessing with his right hand while holding a cross in his left hand.

According to tradition, the icon was stolen three times by the Turks and taken to Constantinople. But each time, it miraculously returned. On the third time, the icon was tied to a marble column with a heavy chain to protect it. When the icon returned, the column and chain also returned and can still be seen in the monastery today. On the way back to the monastery, the icon left its imprint on a steep rock, now known as the „imprint.“

The monastery itself is an impressive example of Byzantine architecture, with high walls and towers surrounding a courtyard. Inside the monastery, there is a chapel with an iconostasis and beautiful frescoes depicting biblical scenes.
